A murder investigation has been opened after a man in his 20s died in hospital shortly after being stabbed in Luton, Bedfordshire Police said.

Officers were called to Humberstone Road at about 18:00 BST on Sunday following reports of an altercation involving two men and a woman. The injured man was taken to hospital where he later died, police said.

Superintendent Rachael Glendenning described the incident as "isolated" and urged the public not to speculate. She said officers would remain at the scene for a "significant period" while enquiries were carried out. Bedfordshire Police added that the victim's family was being supported by specialist officers.

Detectives are appealing for anyone who saw what happened or who has information to contact Bedfordshire Police. No arrests or further details have been released by police as the inquiry continues.

The force did not provide information on the identity of the victim or the suspected attacker(s). Local investigators are conducting forensic examinations at the scene and reviewing CCTV and witness accounts as part of the murder investigation.

Stabbings and knife crime have prompted heightened police activity and community concern in several parts of the UK in recent years, leading forces to emphasise rapid investigative response and victim support in fatal incidents. Bedfordshire Police's statement follows their usual practice of asking the public for assistance while safeguarding the integrity of an ongoing investigation.

Further updates are expected as enquiries progress and as police release additional information to the public.
