Alexander Isak signs for Liverpool in British-record £125m deal
Sweden striker joins on six-year contract after medical; Newcastle say fee could rise to £130m with add-ons
Liverpool have signed Sweden striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle United for a British-record transfer fee of £125 million, the clubs confirmed, with Newcastle sources saying the total package could rise to about £130 million with add-ons.
The 25-year-old completed a medical on Monday before signing a six-year contract and will wear the number nine shirt at Anfield. The move takes Liverpool’s summer spending to about £416.2 million, excluding potential add-on payments.

Isak, who scored 27 goals for Newcastle in all competitions in the 2024-25 season, said on Liverpool’s website that he saw the move as the next step in his career. "This is the next step for me in my career. I'm super happy that I've been given this chance and I'm very motivated to do something well with it," he said. "I want to create history. I want to win trophies. That's ultimately the biggest motivation for me."
Liverpool had a £110 million offer for Isak rejected in August, before returning with the agreement reached this summer. Club officials confirmed the signing on Tuesday, and Newcastle sources described the structure of the deal as containing performance-related add-ons that could lift the total value.
The transfer represents a major investment in Liverpool’s frontline and follows a summer of heavy recruitment by manager and sporting directors aiming to strengthen the squad ahead of the new season. The club has not detailed specific add-on triggers or payment schedules.
Isak is a Sweden international who broke through at clubs in Sweden and the Netherlands before joining Newcastle, where he established himself as the club’s leading scorer in the most recent campaign. His record for the 2024-25 season made him one of Europe’s most sought-after forwards and drew significant interest from a number of top clubs.
Both clubs adhered to the usual medical and contractual formalities prior to the announcement. Liverpool’s acquisition of Isak sets a new benchmark for transfer fees paid by British clubs and will be subject to registration with the relevant football authorities before he is eligible to play in competitive matches for his new club.
The club offered no immediate timetable for Isak’s debut. Liverpool and Newcastle did not disclose all financial details beyond the headline fee and the possibility of add-ons, and neither provided a breakdown of how payments will be scheduled.
Isak’s arrival will be closely watched by supporters and analysts as Liverpool prepare for domestic and European campaigns, with expectations that the striker will play a central role in the club’s attacking plans.
