Residents struggling with the cost of living in the East Riding will be able to access free gifts, affordable food and advice on heating and benefit support at a drop-in event in Withernsea next month.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council said the Help for Households event will take place at Withernsea Leisure Centre on Wednesday 25 September from 10:00 BST to 15:00. The council said attendees can get guidance on saving money, staying warm and schemes to help with heating costs ahead of autumn and winter.

The council said the event will include affordable produce for sale, a giveaway of heated gilets, free SIM cards and mobile data, and advice on benefits available to residents. It also said eligible households can receive help with loft and cavity wall insulation, measures intended to reduce heat loss and lower energy bills.

Councillor Nigel Wilkinson, the authority's cabinet member for finance and governance, said: "We're aware that many people across the East Riding are struggling with the ongoing cost of living crisis and are making active efforts to support those in need." The council advised residents to attend if they need information on support schemes or practical help to reduce household energy use.

The drop-in is part of a series of local council efforts aimed at helping households cope with rising living costs and prepare for colder months. By promoting energy-efficiency measures such as insulation, the council said it hopes to offer both immediate relief through affordable goods and longer-term reductions in heating costs for eligible households.

The event is open to all residents; the council encouraged people seeking specific assistance to bring any relevant paperwork when they attend so advisers can provide tailored guidance on available support.
